Meet x-optima...

I had always known that these “Open Baffle” designs were really incredible at producing (really RE producing) an incredible “staging effect” – but with the newer driver designs we’re working with now (thanks to Danny) we have crossed the line into new territory I did not even know COULD exist…

With x-statik we have a speaker that presents itself extraordinarily well… It can play loud – play soft – do music with aplomb and yet excel in Cinematic (audio) reproduction like no other speaker we have ever made…

I went to Danny a few moons ago and asked him “what if” about a dozen times… He kept saying “sure we can do that”… “are you ready to tool up some more with our own drivers that are ‘q-specific’” – “remember – this will cost a bunch to do what you want Mark”… etc. etc. etc.

I wanted it all – and of course – I wanted it like yesterday… (nothing new there)

Meet the new x-optima – this ain’t your daddy’s x-optima ole mls was planning many moons ago with Danny – but a complete “Open Baffle” x-optima…

Oh yeah…

This is what our new x-optima is going to look like…

You’ll note a few things about this early rendering I’m sharing with you right now…

First… we have FOUR 6.5” custom designed xbl^2 woofers playing in concert in “free air”… This is possible by designing this driver from the ground up for JUST this sort of operational parameter… The xbl^2 technology is what we use in our LS Series… so this is real “trickle down” effect taking hold…

Second… Please note that the mid and tweeter section is just like an x-statik – no change at all (why mess with something that works so perfect – that this created a new reference for me at these price points)…

Third… although not small – they are not overwhelmingly tall either… The complete system is just about 68 inches tall…

Fourth… the base is not completely correct here – there will be a bit of a “front facing out lip” for stability – but more – what’s not depicted here is that this base “opens” in the middle – and the x-o is mounted externally in it’s own 8x12 inch enclosure… Around it to the left and right are sand-fillable bladders that allow you to lock these puppies in using sand or lead shot… These stabilize the complete system and really make it perfect for placement on any surface…

Fifth… you can’t see it well – but on the side of the baffle are custom designed perforated “holders” or “grill shapers”… This is where this design is going to rock… We are going to use a very acoustically transparent material for the grill – but we had to be sure that our issues with “edge diffraction” do not harm what we have worked so hard for – that effortless / dynamic “open baffle sound” I have come to love so much…

The solidly constructed – yet open perforated material acts as the perfect shaper for the new grill idea I have been percolating for months… More about it later…

The new x-optima… born of a real excitement for open baffle sound – and for the versatility that this type of loudspeaker allows… I can promise something very very special here. The bigger brother x-otica will be very similar – but he will have an operating sub woofer located behind the front baffle (sitting on the base) and will be capable of 20Hz extension in-room…

By the way… that lovely 8x12 enclosure that houses the x/o (crossover) is JUST THE RIGHT SIZE for something to sit right atop…

How does the X-LS Super Wave Guide compare to the X-Pro? These speakers will share the same woofer, but that's about it. These woofers are the new M-165X. Are we likely to see an optimally low-tuned floorstander at some point to get the most out of the XBL motor? It is possible. If you want it I am sure Mark will make it. It can easily be made into a small floor standing speaker just like X-SLS. You won't need a stand and it would increase the low end extension. It will have a very smooth and very accurate frequency response. Size and weight will be close to the standard X-LS plus a few extra pounds. Sensitivity will be close to that of the current X-LS as well. The X-LS SE (signature edition, or something) will be a mini monitor based more solely on performance without cost limitations to build, but built in a way and in sufficient quantities to be offered at a great price point. This is going to be a tough speaker to beat. Think of it as an X-LS on steroids. It is also designed to easily cross over into the studio market as very accurate playback monitors. These will be ideal for close listening. The tweeter will be loaded into a wave guide to increase the tweeters operating range so that it can be crossed over lower to the woofer. This will give the speaker greater detail and resolution down into a range that would not be possible for a woofer to produce at this level. This wave guide will also take away the surface reflections typical of a tweeter mounted on the front of a cabinet. This will make the speaker sound more transparent.

The samples were made - and Danny has issued an adjustment to them... New samples have been molded and I understand that this final rev should do the trick...

Once we have a final sample we can then proceed with orders... roughly 45 days in factory - 30 days in transit - 20 to 30 days production time - and then on to av123...

This is the "mls RDM" (Reference Digital Monitor) with the electronics module attached... The electronics are a tri-amp package - 150 watts for the woofer and 50 watts each for the midrange and the tweeter... (so 250 watts total PER SPEAKER)... ALL DSP Controlled Crossovers and EQ...

I am going to market this guy (in limited production quantities) with the passive Crossover Module at $999 per pair... and with the electronics at an extra $299 per speaker...

Description: The RDM is going to be constructed using stacked and laminated multi-ply birch. This technique is very time consuming – and more expensive than you can imagine – but – really makes for a sensational enclosure. Sexy to the touch – and really, “impossibly beautiful”. I really want to do it – and prove that we can do this because of the incredible minds (and ambition) of our Cali Design and Production Team.

The RDM is a speaker designed to be placed further out into a room. Its omni direction design will allow the speaker to sound much bigger than it is and help take the sound of the box away from the speaker. Imaging and sound staging will be superb.

While x-pro is sealed… she has a hidden door that unlocks a docking chamber that interlocks with her “mating stand” that extends to low frequencies and also sets her off visually (if not emotionally)… Her stand is not yet far enough along in the costing process to know exactly where “he” will stand… The matching stand will couple to the speaker and allow the woofer to utilize the air space and port in the stand, and allow it to play lower. You can have it either way.

How does the X-LS Super Wave Guide compare to the RDM?
These speakers will share the same woofer, but that's about it.

It will be using a planar magnetic tweeter that is also capable of playing down very low and it is very fast, with very clean spectral decays, and very low distortion.

The "standard" x/o will be totally removable - and in it's place you can drop in a COMPLETE digital electronics package consisting of:

- 50 watt all digital power amp for the tweeter

What's new for MkII?

The new RSC100 MKII is basically an ELT Center Channel at its core, but with a tad more “oomph” in its belly --- while being housed in an enlarged RSC100 chassis. The result...a serious knock-out of a product at $399 dollars.

If you were to examine the individual sound channels in a typical Dolby Digital or DTS movie soundtrack, you'd find that the center channel carries more than it's share of the load. It's responsible for projecting crystal-clear dialog, compelling background music, and startling front sound effects. That's why audio experts agree that the center channel is the most important loudspeaker in your home theater. The RS550MkII Loudspeaker has been retired and replaced by the RS450.

What's new in MkII? The main changes here are new crossover networks and topologies that we’ve been working on for some time now. We’ve made some changes (mainly) to the woofer section, and this produces a more “controlled, or well-damped response" in both music and multi-channel configurations.

The classic RS550 is more of a “hard driver” (in the lovely sense of that expression) while the new RS550 MkII is more “refined or controlled." Both are perfectly adept at 2-channel music, though equally at home in an HT environment.

The two-way, three-driver RS550 design employs two custom 6.5” long-throw, low-distortion aluminum cone woofers to provide a bedrock-solid foundation for the phenomenal Vifa Ring Radiator tweeter. The RS550 can reproduce the entire musical spectrum--from lush, impactful lows to warm, engaging highs--with the authority and delicacy of far more expensive competitors. With its exceptional dynamic range and nuance-filled soundstage, RS550 is a fabulous choice for 2-channel and home theater environments alike. What's new in MkII? The main changes here are new crossover networks and topologies that we’ve been working on for some time now. We’ve made some changes (mainly) to the woofer section, and this produces a more “controlled, or well-damped response" in both music and multi-channel configurations.

The classic RS250 is more of a “hard driver” (in the lovely sense of that expression) while the new RS250 MkII is more “refined or controlled." Both are perfectly adept at 2-channel music, though equally at home in an HT environment.

Featuring the Vifa Ring Radiator, the RS250 is unmistakably stellar at high frequencies, just as you'd expect from a speaker with such an extraordinary tweeter. But what might surprise you is the way the RS250--with its hefty custom 6.5" aluminum alloy long-throw cone woofer and an enclosure size of nearly 1000 cubic inches--handles all but the very lowest octaves with an authoritative slam that will leave you grinning from ear to ear. The RS250s have been carefully voiced to timbre match all of the other speakers in the Rocket line, but work especially well in home theater applications as rear-surround speakers in conjunction with the RS750 or RS550 floorstanding speakers and our RSC200 center channel. Two-channel music aficionados will love the way the superlative RS250s disappear into the soundstage, while home theater buffs who prefer the aesthetics of bookshelf speakers will find exceptional performance from the RS250s when used as front channel speakers in conjunction with a similarly-superior subwoofer such as the UFW-10.

Want to wall mount your RS250s?
Brackets such as those from Omnimount work quite well but you must drill holes in the cabinet. This will not void your warranty but you will be putting holes in that gorgeous cabinet! An alternative is to purchase the "Rocket LaunchPad" plate. Originally developed for the Rocket RS150/250 speaker stand, you can attach a mount to this plate instead of the speaker! It's shaped like the base of the RS250, 1" thick and black. The RS250 has threaded inserts built into the base. Using the supplied hardware, you bolt this plate to the speaker. If you use an Omnimount 30.0 'WB' style mount, you can attach the mount to this plate. It will extend out from the bottom of the speaker to the wall. No drilling into the cabinets! To order a pair of these plates for $20, call us and we will add it to your order!

Description: x-statik is really a wonderful product. These beauties will have a super-sexy sculpted baffle that will allow us to make use of some sensational construction techniques - and allow for the MTM in the OB portion to be grilled or not - up to you ... believe me... this speaker will become legendary...

TWIN 6.5" woofers in their own enclosure (sort of Strata Mini like)
TWIN 6.5" midranges with our new Ultra~SILK 1" tweeter (these are above the woofers in an OPEN BAFFLE arrangement.)
The dome tweeter is made of HyperTex material
